Ecommerce replatforming

Migrating is not moving a site. It is the chance to make it grow.

The real question is not only “which platform”: it is whether migrating suits you, towards what, and how to do it without losing SEO, sales or history. We have worked on every platform since 2005 — Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce, PrestaShop — so we start from your numbers and tell you the truth, even when it is “stay where you are”.

THE THESIS

A MEANS, NOT A FLAG

A platform is not a religion.

In 2005, on eTies.it, I built ecommerce in osCommerce — because that was the tool of the day. Since then I have watched every platform be born, grow and sometimes age: Magento, PrestaShop, WooCommerce, Shopify. We have used them all, properly, on real projects.

And that is exactly what lets me tell you something uncomfortable: almost every agency recommends the platform they know, not the one you need. We do the opposite. A platform is a means, not a flag: it has to fit your business like a made-to-measure suit. Too big, it smothers you in costs. Too small, it holds you back. Right, it makes you run.

THE SIGNS

How you know your platform is holding you back.

It is rarely a collapse: it is a sum of small frictions. An unintuitive backend, integrations that get complicated, performance dropping, slow or absent updates, fragile security. The catalog and the processes grow, but the platform stays behind.

The clearest sign? You spend more time handling technical emergencies than selling — and meanwhile the competitors pass you. Do not wait for falling numbers to tell you it is late.

NO CHEERLEADING

THE FOUR PLATFORMS

Said as they are.

Platform

Strong when

The hidden cost

Shopify

You want simplicity that scales

Less freedom over the code

Shopify Plus

You are enterprise: volumes, B2B, automations

High subscription (often < Magento)

Magento / Adobe Commerce

You have complex enterprise needs

Heavy maintenance and costs for a mid-sized company

WooCommerce

You live on content in WordPress

Dependence on plugins, limits at high volume

PrestaShop

You want a European middle road, multilingual/multicurrency

Paid modules, scalability to manage

FROM THE BUSINESS, NOT THE PRICE LIST

How we decide the right platform.

We do not start from “which platform”: we start from you. Objectives, volumes, in-house team, the integrations you need, budget and roadmap. We put the real pros and cons of each on the table and propose the architecture with the best ratio of impact to complexity — the one that takes you furthest with the fewest headaches.

Sometimes the answer is “change”; sometimes it is “stay where you are and let us fix it”. Either way it is a choice based on your numbers, not on our preferences.

OUR VIEW

Often — not always — the answer is Shopify.

We say it because we think it, not because we are Partners: for many companies today Shopify is the forward-looking choice — automation, omnichannel, speed, no servers or patches to manage — and with Shopify Plus it reaches as far as enterprise needs go: custom checkout, automations, multistore, native B2B.

But “often” is not “always”. If you live on content in WordPress, WooCommerce is sometimes enough; if you have particular European constraints, PrestaShop is still in play; if you have a well-run enterprise infrastructure already, the right move may be to optimize, not to rebuild.

NOT A COST TO ENDURE

Migrating is not “moving the site”. It is a chance to grow.

A migration done properly is the perfect moment to put things in order: analyze the processes and find room for improvement, simplify and innovate (with AI too), clean up the catalog, optimize the user experience and the internal workflow, and get ready to grow — including into foreign markets.

It is not a cost to endure: designed well, it pays for itself in efficiency and sales.

THE REAL VALUE

The real challenge is not the platform. It is connecting it to everything else.

An ecommerce today is not an island. The real value appears when the platform talks to the management system (orders, stock, price lists, customer records and invoicing synced in real time), to marketplaces and external feeds (catalog, prices and availability consistent wherever you sell, with no overselling) and to the marketing tools (CRM, automation, analytics, to segment, personalize and measure the ROI).

This is where we make the difference: we do not “put a site online”, we connect a system.

HONEST CRITICISM

And what if the right answer were not Shopify? It has already happened.

ODF sold packaging B2B on Magento, and Magento had become a weight. The obvious choice, for us, would have been Shopify. But looking at their constraints and their processes, the right move was a different one: we took them to PrestaShop, where they found their agility again without Magento’s costs.

We recommend Shopify when the numbers say so — not out of habit, and not because we are Partners. An ugly truth beats a pretty lie, even when it costs us a more comfortable project.

QUESTIONS

FAQ

The questions we always get.

Which signs say it is time to migrate?

An unintuitive backend, complicated integrations, performance dropping, slow or absent updates, fragile security. If the catalog and the processes are growing but the platform is holding you back, it is time to look at it.

How do you decide the right platform?

We start from the business: objectives, volumes, team, integrations, budget and roadmap. We compare the real pros and cons and propose the architecture with the best impact-to-complexity ratio.

How long does a well-planned migration take?

Usually a few months, with clear phases: analysis, staging, data migration, QA, go-live and post-launch support. It depends on catalog, integrations and customizations.

Any risk of losing SEO or order history?

No, not if it is done properly: backups, staging, 301 mapping, data integrity tests and a controlled release window. We monitor Search Console and analytics and step in straight away.

What does it cost, and what is included?

A phased plan with transparent line items — analysis, development, data migration, integrations, SEO, QA, training — separating one-off from recurring costs.

Why do you often recommend Shopify?

Because it combines simplicity, performance, security and fast integrations, and it is SaaS: no servers to manage. But it is not a rule: if another road suits you, we tell you.
